The Great Wall

In the winter break of '96 I took a trip on the ferry from Inchon in Korea to Tianjin in China. The crossing itself was an over-nighter and although I've sailed a few times this crossing proved to be very rough, but well worth the effort. In the picture you can see the Great wall trailing behind me as far as the eye can see. A great place to have spent Christmas day in China.

A slow boat
 to China

Here are some of the people on this particular crossing. The only names I can remember are Eric (I think) on the far left and Reto, from Switzerland, next to him. The rest of the travellers are Korean save for the chap second from the right who's Chinese.

To the left here are Dave, Andi and Reto in front of the Forbidden City. Dave's from Canada and his girlfriend Andi, from New Zealand, taught English in Korea before moving to Canada with Dave. Reto is Swiss and comes from the German speaking regions. We met on the Ferry over from Inchon, took one of the cheaper buses from Tianjin to Beijing and found a hotel together. On Christmas day I joined a tour to the great wall but the next day all four of us took in the Forbidden City.
*Not only was it forbidden, formidable and fantastic but it was freezing.

A little Emperor

Okay so this isn't anyone in particular that I met but as I really like this photo that I took of a small child playing within the Forbidden City I thought I'd include it here.

We meet again!

Here are a couple of Korean guys that I first met on the Ferry over from Inchon and met again just outside the entrance to the Forbidden City. Unfortunately I don't remember their names, though if anyone out there should recognise these or anyone else I have within these pages please drop me a line at six_a_t_w@hotmail.com.

Here's my unofficial guide who stuck to my side like a potty to a baby's head. As much as I ran up hills and the Great Wall itself she wasn't far behind, just to be able to sell some postcards to me after I'd finished sight-seeing. With so much dedication to her job it was the least I could do to buy a book on the Great Wall from her.

We met at
the wall

Here's a couple from the states who I met after returning to the rendezvous point after walking along the wall for a good couple of hours. As you can tell I don't remember their names but should anyone recognise them I'll give them full credit if you e-mail me their names.

*

Here's another shot of the Wall from one of it's own gates,
not as some have thought, from an aeroplane.

*

Here's a shot of the Forbidden City from outside.

* *

Here are a couple of shots from Yu Yuan Gardens in Shanghai.

*

This is the Pearl River as it runs through Guangzhou on a misty day in December.

*

Should you need a haircut, that too is available down by the riverside.

Here I am just about ready for my first footsteps into
Hong Kong in December '96.
